Image GuideQ: Are open-toe shoes appropriate to wear with a suit?
A. Open-toe shoes are appropriate depending on the occasion. Formal and casual occasions are appropriate but usually not in the workplace. Wearing closed-toe shoes at work may be required for safety reasons but they should be worn to maintain a professional appearance as well. If you are unsure if the occasion would be appropriate, then always opt for the closed-toe shoes. Q. What is the most appropriate type of suit for an interview? A. Traditionally, the skirt suit is the choice of suit for interviews. However, in less conservative settings, the pantsuit is acceptable. When considering a suit purchase, it should never be left to the last minute. Allow yourself at least one to two weeks to find the right suit and to accommodate any alterations you may need. For almost all interviews (or if you are unsure), opt for traditional solid colors such as black, grey, camel or navy. The Suit Closet refers to these colors as the Basic 4. Pinstripe suits are appropriate if they are pin-thin stripes in traditional colors. Choose a blouse or shell that coordinates and complements the color of your suit and is not too loud. Your jewelry should be very minimal. Makeup and hair should not be a distraction, keep it as subtle and natural as possible. Q. How much should I spend on a suit? A. Your suit should be seen as an investment. The difference between a low-cost suit and a well-tailored suit is very obvious in its fit, details, stitching and the quality of the fabrication. A well-made suit will also last much longer than a poorly-made suit. Do not be afraid to make alterations. The slightest tucks can make your suit look like a custom fitted suit. One can purchase a great fitting suit from The Suit Closet for $220 to $650. Q. Do I have to wear hosiery with my suits? A. Fortunately, hosiery today has become a decision based on preference. Hosiery always looks more professional, but it is not required to complete your suit. However, some companies do expect it, so double check with your company's dress code policy. Another hosiery alternative is to opt for colors and prints. This is a simple way to jazz up your suiting wardrobe. Q. What are the best colors in suiting I should purchase if I currently do not own any suits? A. The standard suit staple colors we sell most of are what we call our Basic 4: black, grey, beige/camel and navy. These colors work well when you first begin to build your work wardrobe because of their versatility. If you can purchase the colors in similar fabrications, you can mix and match the pieces. Q. How appropriate is it to mix and match suit pieces? A. One must be very careful when mixing and matching their suit pieces. Matching fabrication is a must when mixing basics. The mismatching of basic fabrications can take the beauty and professional appearance away from a suit immediately. Mixing is best when done with jackets of pattern and solid pants or vice versa.
